Diabetes manifests as a result of the lack of insulin secreted by the pancreas, or from its ability to function normally. It is the job of the pancreas to take the food we’ve chewed and break it into smaller particles that make it easier to digest and absorb. It is also in charge of when the energy created by food gets released in the form of insulin to keep a nice steady stream of glucagen when blood sugar levels get too low. This information does not discount the importance of maintaining a healthy diet and active lifestyle but as an alternative healing practitioner, I’ve researched and am a firm believer that most problems are the result of emotional issues.
Mind Body Connection
Our thoughts and emotions play an enormous role in all aspects of our health. Research has proven if we tend to our psychological and emotional well-being we can, in many instances, prevent, reverse, recover, and cure ourselves from many medical illnesses including diabetes. Need proof? Visit The Institute of Noetic Sciences. They have documented over 3,500 documented, and verifiable cases of, often life-threatening diseases, going away on their own.
The mind and body are closely linked, and their relationship can have a positive or negative effect on your health and quality of life. Our emotional states can trigger chain reactions that affect blood chemistry, heart rate, and the activity of every cell and organ in the body - from the stomach and digestive tract to the immune system.
Unequivocally, where your thoughts go your body will follow. The mind cannot only heal the body. The mind can hurt the body. You can think yourself well and think yourself sick. Thoughts can actually change the receptor site on cells, as a result, your thoughts can produce cells that will heal your body. Disease is a belief system. Believe you can be well and you can. Let’s examine some of the thoughts diabetics tend to have that might lend itself to the existence of diabetes.
The pancreas is the gland linked with a very specific set of emotions. Diabetics very often have too many desires at one time making it difficult to ‘break them down’ into smaller pieces as is the job of the pancreas. Additionally, you expect too much from yourself and from others and because of that diabetics tend to be overworked.
Diabetics have a preoccupation with power but have a tendency to feel sorry for themselves when things don’t go the way they would like. This may be true for people who aren’t diabetic but diabetics tend to wallow in the self-pity. Diabetics get stuck in feeling sorry for themselves and regurgitate negative emotions over and over again.
Diabetics tend to lose control of their emotions often and are crippled by criticism. This, sometimes, results in putting on weight to act as a buffer between us and the world whenever we feel attacked or criticized or when our self-esteem takes a dip. Diabetics feel like they are not in control of their lives or feel like their happiness is dependent upon other’s actions. Diabetics tend to blame others for their misfortunes, have trouble sleeping, have a negative self-image or allow others to define how you see yourself.
Diabetics tend a lot of time researching information about making decisions that will make them happy rather than just doing what they know, internally, what makes them happy. Diabetics can have the inability to accept or digest reality. This inability on a psychological plane manifests in the organs responsible for digestion, which includes the pancreas.
Overcoming Psychological Blockages
Learn to let go and let things happen at their own pace.
Write down the benefits of letting go of whatever you’re holding on to or trying to
control. Visit that list every day until you feel a sense of truly having released.
Stop trying to control the course of events.
Write down the things you wish you had control over and then write down a list
of things you can control. If your grown children are making bad decisions, you
cannot control that (and worry is a form of control). If your relationship is in trouble
you can only control what you do and how you respond. Your partner has the right
to make his/her own choices. You can’t control that.
Be mindful of the beauty of today and stop waiting on the future of happiness.
Focus on the now. What is happening right now? Truly be present otherwise you
miss out on the beauty of today. Be thankful for what you have now. Have you
eaten? Do you have food, clothes, shelter? You have more than you think. Take
inventory of the wonderful things you have in your life and be grateful.
Reject the criticism of others.
Change the story in your head. Decide whose voice is important enough to affect
your life. Never compare yourself to others. You are the only measuring rod for your
success and happiness. Always remember, you are not your circumstances. You
might not be where you want or with who you want but that doesn’t take away from
the amazing being you are. Circumstances always change. Focus on happy things
and happy things will happen.
Journaling is an effective tool to help make important connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It can find and release pent up emotions that can manifest in the form of disease.
Where do I feel confident in my life?
Where do I not feel confident in my life?
Write down what your ideal life looks like containing everything within your control?
Where am I dissatisfied in my life? How can I change that?
Children with diabetes may feel like they are not acknowledged or be seeking attention. They tend to feel like they are not a part of the family or a burden to the family.

6. Sweet Potatoes - Combats excessivley dry hair by sealing in moisture.

I’ve spent long hours contemplating the health of African Americans. I’ve spent even longer hours contemplating the systematic racism that has now manifested in the form of food. Communities of color, particularly those living in inner city and urban neighborhoods find it difficult, if not impossible, to access fresh food on a regular basis. Full service grocery stores, offering organic and/or locally sourced produce, or farmer’s markets are rarely spotted in our communities. However, with minimal effort, you can find highly processed foods, foods high in carcinogens, fats, and sugars and fast food chains offering a wide variety of pseudo foods for a very reasonable price. As a result, healthy food options have been reduced to dreams our ancestors had for us. And nevermind the argument that inner city residents wouldn’t purchase healthy foods options if they were made readily available. Data shows most inner city residents shop at stores closest to them because of many economic barriers including the lack of transportation.
After the civil war, twenty African American leaders, a group of Black ministers in Savannah, Georgia, convened with General William T.Sherman to discuss the best way for Blacks to secure and enjoy their newfound freedom. In all of their infinite and spiritual wisdom, the clergy agreed the best way would be land ownership. The ownership of land offered a chance to be economically self-sufficient, build and pass on wealth, and provide a means to feed their families.
Considering that a diet rich in fresh produce can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent many cancers, reverse digestive problems, and regulate blood sugar levels, it makes sense that 40 acres and a mule had the strong possibility of eliminating the high rates of disease that inflict African Americans. Because we don’t have access to or proper education about healthy eating, diabetes is 60% more common in Black Americans than White Americans. African Americans are 3 times more likely to die of asthma than White Americans. Strokes kill 4 times more 35-54 year old Black Americans than White Americans. Blacks develop high blood pressure earlier in life with more than 45% of Black women aged 20 and older having high blood pressure, and Black men have a 40% higher cancer death rate than white men.
It is common knowledge that eating a variety of fruits and vegetables that represent the colors of the rainbow give our bodies the mix of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals we need to prevent, treat, and reverse disease. 40 acres and a mule would do that. Wouldn’t it? Of course it would. So, the question becomes how much land does it take to feed one person a steady healthy diet for one year? The answer, in it’s closest approximate, is one acre. The 40 acres of tillable land as written in Special Field Order 15, indeed would have provided economic sustainability, provided the foods need to prevent disease, and create generational wealth.
Once Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, his successor, Andrew Johnson overturned the order and returned the land back to the confederates who owned it before it was confiscated during the Civil War. The term, 40 acres and a mule, has become a mere euphemism for Black liberation, social inequality, political injustice, and the name for Spike Lee’s production company. Most Blacks have made resolve with the fact that we will never get our 40 acres and a mule. Perhaps it’s time to mobilize a contemporary group of Black ministers who will address the financial, and health disparities born of broken promises, and constitutional revisions.

Scientists in South Korea recently found that carotenoids from chlorella are effective in preventing and treating cancer because they inhibit cancer cell growth.
The reason that cancer cells are so problematic is that they refuse to die on cue. Chlorella has active ingredients that make sure cancer cells die when it is their time to die.
Cancer cells develop in everyone’s body. People who have never been diagnosed with cancer have hundreds or thousands of cancerous cells in their bodies on a daily basis. It is the job of the immune system to make sure these dangerous cells are found and destroyed before they can develop into full blown cancers.
When a person is diagnosed with cancer it means that something has gone seriously wrong with their immune system. So common sense tells us that the best way to prevent cancer is to strengthen the immune system.

A little over half of men experience erectile dysfunction. At age 40, about 40 percent struggle with the condition. Standard treatments include pharmaceutical medications, pumps, implants, and surgery but many men prefer natural options, especially African American men. Many natural options are effective at improving symptoms of ED.
A number of different factors can increase your risk of ED. Since attaining an erection involves the brain, hormones, muscles, and blood vessels, a problem with any of these can block the normal functioning of the penis. Some common causes of ED include: heart disease, diabetes, obesity, multiple sclerosis and alcohol and tobacco use. In fact 72% of men diagnosed with alcohol dependence were also diagnosed with sexual dysfunction.
Standard treatments for ED include lifestyle changes, such as exercising, losing weight, stopping smoking, or curbing alcohol intake. Medications like Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra increase blood flow to the penis, but the side effects are troubling.
There are many natural solutions. The most popular one is Panax Ginseng called the “herbal Viagra,” has solid research behind it. Men with ED are more likely to have low levels of DHEA. DHEA is a natural hormone produced by the adrenal glands that can be converted to both estrogen and testosterone. Adding a DHEA supplement to your diet can show significant improvement.

Perhaps our ancestors were on to something. The creation of most soul food was a survival tactic; however, greens are for more than just SURVIVING…..greens are for THRIVING!
Collard Greens provide more than a quarter of your recommended daily calcium intake and two days’ worth of vitamin K, and half of your daily value of folate. But most importantly, Collard Greens provide a mega-dose of an important cancer-fighting nutrient sulforaphane. Although Collards Greens provide some nutritional value when steamed cooked, you will experience more benefits by eating them raw. Try adding them to your salad or using in place of lettuce when making sandwiches.
Turnip Greens provide almost 1/5th of your daily calcium intake but Turnip Greens also provide high amounts of potassium which boosts endurance and overall muscle strength. Turnip Greens also help to lower blood pressure because they are high in dietary nitrates. Turnip Greens do a wonderful job of holding their nutrients even after being steamed or sautéed.
A nice Romaine lettuce in place of your usual iceberg will add twice the protein and calcium, three times the vitamin K and four times the iron to your salad. Romaine adds a whopping eight times the amount of vitamin C.
Eating healthy is not as difficult as purported to be. Some minor adjustments can improve the quality of your life and add years to your life. Greens are truly a soul food!

In a society that has become overly obsessed with watching television, it is important to discuss the negative effects too much television has on your holistic health. Many doctors, psychologists, consumer experts and academics agree that TV oversimplifies reality. This over simplification debilitates our capacity for rational thought. We have become microwave thinkers expecting solutions to problems be solved in 30 to 60 minutes. That’s not reality .That’s TV.
The next one goes without saying. Watching excessive TV is bad for your physical health. It can lead to obesity, cardiovascular impairment and vision problems. In addition to poor physical health, watching too much television you lose metacognitive abilities.
Large amounts of television not only influences your spending habits as proven by the power of advertisements but Americans spend over $6 billion per year just paying for cable bills, movie subscriptions, dvd’s, and the electricity to power it all.
Last year the average American watched an average of 5.1 hours of television per day. That’s precious time that could be spent cultivating our physical, mental and spiritual selves. Not to mention, television is damaging real life relationships with the real people in our lives.
My recommendation- start off by fasting from television one day a week. Slowly increase your fasting time until you reach a point where you spend more of your time with yourself and loved ones than you do with complete strangers and the mind control of mass media!

What is it about drinking too much alcohol that makes you feel like you want to crawl into a hole and die the next morning? Let’s find out some of the science behind the morning after. We’re all familiar with the delightful symptoms of a hangover (headache, trembling, nausea, fatigue, dehydration, diarrhea, etc), but what causes them? For many years, dehydration was blamed as the primary cause for hangovers. Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it makes you pee more and hence makes you lose water. Dehydration is probably responsible for a portion of your hangover, and is responsible for that banging headache.
Because alcohol is a diuretic, you lose a lot of vitamins and nutrients during a night on the town; the most important of which are vitamins B and C. Those people that use a vitamin B complex — a pill that includes B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), folic acid, B6 and B12, among others — to combat hangovers swear by their effectiveness. The most heralded is B12 (also called cobalamin), which performs a key role in the functioning of the brain and nervous system.

Sleep apnea is becoming more and more common. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. This means that the brain and the rest of the body may not get enough oxygen.
Luckily, there is no need for any medications. There are some simple throat, tongue and jaw exercises you can do to strengthen passages that have become weakened over time resulting in sleep apnea.
1. Press the length of your tongue to roof of your mouth and hold for three minutes a day.
2. Purse your lips as if to kiss. Hold your lips tightly together and move them up and to the right, then up and to the left 10 times. Repeat this sequence three times.
3. Pretend you’re chewing gum. Make sure that your molars are moving. Your mouth should stay closed. Begin with few minutes of chewing and gradually increase duration. Adding “mmm” sounds to your chewing will help in opening the throat wider.
4. Stick your tongue, the farthest you can. Hold it for several seconds. Pull back, breathe and repeat.
5. Clench a pencil or stick between your teeth for 10 minutes or as long as you can, just before going to sleep.
Over time you will begin to notice big changes. Eventually the need for sleep aids will be eliminated. These simple exercises can be done anytime, anywhere. The best part is you will get a better night’s sleep and, because your snoring will decrease, so will your partner.
